Recently, in addtion to audio products, digital processing is becoming the major trend for televisions and telephones. It is also becoming common that physical signals other than audio or video are processed as digital instead of analog. Most processing is achieved by general purpose CPUs or DSPs (Digital Signal Processors) and the entity is arithmetic proceesing.
It is relatively easy that operations suitable for digital processing such as four operations in arithmetic or numerical comparison can be replaced to digital. However, it is not so easy to replace filters handling signal in the frequency domain. Even engineers having expertise in analog filters cannot design a digital filter realized only by four operations unless they learn the basics of digital filers. In addition, unexpected problems often happen even in matters that are apparently easy to replace with digital. Therefore, it is highly recommended to acquire the correct knowledge of digital signla processing since replacement to digital unexpectedly takes time and effort.
